A year ago, Chris Kelso and I started talking about working on something a little different for Rooster Republic. We spoke about a handful of projects, but the one that stuck with the both of us would be a non-fiction imprint that would specialize in film, specifically cult classics, the types of movies that one may even consider… Bizarro.
And it has been a busy year, but the project is finally coming to fruition.
RoosterVision will begin releasing titles in February 2017. Read on to see what Kelso has to say about the project:
“It’s no secret that Bizarro loves movies – it’s a genre that takes more cues from slashers, B-movies and experimental film than it does from literature. We think those roots are worth exploring.
Bizarro fiction espouses all the same aesthetics that make cinema such an enduring, visceral experience: there being a shared emphasis on moving its audience with disturbing and memorable imagery, amongst other aspects. RoosterVision has banded together some of the genre’s top writers to talk about their early movie-going experiences and share the flicks that helped mould them into the writers they are today.
Werner Herzog once said that “Academia is the death of cinema. It is the very opposite of passion. Film is not the art of scholars, but of illiterates.” – So this won’t be your usual turgid, intellectual masturbation or an attempt at film study. These are honest and emotionally driven stories about the subjective experience of watching movies. And it is all subjective, like the taste of wine, or the perceived redness of an evening sky. If you’ve ever wondered what Laura Lee Bahr’s favourite film might be, what Richard Thomas loved so much about ‘Under the Skin’ (specifically the movie), or how Andrew Hook felt about a Luis Buñuel classic, you’ve come to the right place!”

So, keep watching the Rooster Republic page. We’ll be announcing who’s working with us and their movies of choice over the next several weeks, in addition to posting original content, like movie reviews and interviews.
