…an ongoing series of articles spotlighting movies, music, art, comics, and other assorted media that we at Rooster Republic Press find ourselves enjoying. Once a week, on Thursdays, we will showcase new and old works and, hopefully, help spread the word on great stuff you might otherwise miss out on.
RoosterVision was previously the name of our non-fiction imprint, and since those titles and that line of books are no longer, we have decided to resurrect RoosterVision for the purpose of this showcase. Enjoy!
This is the fifth entry in our “RoosterVision” series and we are going to carve out a minute to talk about Doungjai Gam’s novella, WATCH THE WHOLE GODDAMNED THING BURN. Published in 2019 by Nightscape Press as a part of their “Charitable Chapbook” line. The book may be slim but it is certainly handsomely produced, a treat to see the design rise up to the meet the expectations set by the manuscript. Matthew Revert handled cover art for the book, while Luke Spooner (Carrion House) supplied several full-color illustrations.
The story concerns itself with revenge, and the all-consuming nature of that particular act, both figuratively and literally in this case. But, more specifically than that, the tale is about Thai-American Sammi Hayes, trying to find her place in an America that treats her and her family as outsiders, all the while dealing with an obsessive, predatory boyfriend. These elements eventually meet head on and end in a tragedy. Distraught Sammi takes matters into her own hands, and the events which unfold from there are where the real horror and intensity of the drama lie.
It is a wonderful, one-sitting read.
Only 100 copies of the book are being produced by Nightscape. Each copy is signed by Doungjai Gam. As of this writing, only 23 copies remain. One third of all sales of this chapbook will go to support Trans Lifeline!

And if you like WATCH THE WHOLE GODDAMNED THING BURN, then consider picking up Doungjai Gam’s earlier collection of fiction, GLASS SLIPPER DREAMS, SHATTERED, which you can get HERE.
Thanks for reading, as always, and please remember…
