Commission Complete: Garret Schuelke’s GODAN

I met Garret online first and eventually in person while camping out with Michael Allen Rose and Sauda Namir for Chicago’s Printer Row, a huge book festival that shuts down a few city blocks.

So, I was more than happy to help when he asked me to help flush out an interpenetration of his character GODAN. He sent me some reference material and after a quick chat, I made a sketch to get my placement set and then, some hours later, came up with this:

And let’s take a look at the rough sketch and line work to see just how far things progressed from pencil to the end result:

I tend to go fairly rough and fast when it comes to pencil work that I know will end up digitally painted. So as I soon as I was finished, I could see that proportion would need to be corrected once I got to the coloring phase.

I’m pretty happy with how it turned out and as soon as the current docket lets up, I definitely want to play more with this approach.

Four New Cover Art Pieces

Last week was marked by some type of cold/flu that wouldn’t quit, so Friday night, not being able to sleep and with a bottle of Nyquil at my side, I distracted myself by making some pre-made covers. I wanted to try some different approaches with these, all but one (The Fury) are new takes. I try to keep things fresh each week by introducing different variations, partly for fun, partly to keep from exhausting one particular out.

Each piece is $100 and can be expanded to a print jacket for $25 extra. If you’d like to know more about services, navigate to the site menu to Design Services or click HERE.

New Horror Pre-made Covers!

At the end of the day, usually around three in the morning, I set aside commission work to knock out some original pre-made covers. I love expanding and tinkering with new styles to keep growing my skill set, and while earlier in life I trained myself in pencil work for comics, I ended up falling in love with digital painting and composite work. There is something enjoyable about taking several normal images and subverting them into a mosaic of horror with layers of texture and color, mutating the mundane, and blending photography, illustration, and digital coloring together in the hopes of creating something enjoyable. It’s like a puzzle, and you do not always know exactly where the image will end up. It keeps me fresh. Keeps me sharp.

New Stock art and Now Introducing Premium Packages

It occurred to me that it might be real nice to have a package available for authors who want more than just a book cover version of their product. I’ve done a lot of book shows in my life, and it’s always cool to see a book’s eye catching art as a poster, or buttons, or stickers. A lot of my latest work has been built at larger sizes , so last night, I went ahead and split our Pre-Made Section in our Design Services into two categories – Premium and Standard. The initial purchase for an ebook/jacket is exactly the same for both categories, but the Premium covers can be expanded to 11×17 inch posters and various other larger merchandise like shirts, banners, etc. etc.

If you are buying a Premium cover, it is not required to expand the package and spend the extra cash. It simply just gives you the option.

Premium and Standard can both be made into smaller items like book marks, stickers, ads, and buttons for an extra charge, but the Standard covers cannot really go up in size because they will distort and lose quality. The Premium package begins at an extra $150, and will provide the author/publisher with a hi-rez file with the book cover and its text. You are not just buying a poster version of your book, but essentially buying the rights to resale this poster as your own merchandise, and keep the profit all to yourself. Each item beyond that will be a smaller charge – items like buttons, stickers, ads, and book marks for example – are easy to retrofit and begin at $25 per item. Some items will need to be discussed because time and difficulty can be a thing. If you have any questions, always feel free to reach out to us at roosterrepublicpress@gmail.com.

Now let’s take a look at the two new covers – The Ritual, a Premium, and Bladepunk, a Standard cover.

More Horror! More covers!

In a whirlwind, fueled by October and horror and espresso, I cranked out these three pieces yesterday like a man possessed. If you’re ever in the need for something dark and strange for your project, feel free to hit me up. The macabre is not all I do for cover work, but horror is always first place in my heart.

All pre-made pieces are $100, and can be expanded to full print jackets for an extra $25, all text and kindle cover included. For more info on our services click here or check our Design Services page from the site menu. We are also open for commissions.
